Saying so much by saying so little

One of the aspects to futurist poetry; abolition of syntax.
Fragments of words.
Im focusing on things that makes me angry.
Slowly, it sort of turn into sadness.
So im thinking of mixing those feelings.

Visual Research

Im looking more to the styles instead of the content itself.

Works of Marinetti

Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, founder of futurism. He built his poems as collages, cutting numbers and letters from newspapers as well as drawing some elements. His poems free from syntax and linear writtings. Here are examples of his works.

Futurism

Futurism is an art movement in the 20th century, found by poet Fillippo Tommaso Marinetti to give formal expression to dynamic energy, movement and mechanical processes.

- mainly occurs in Italy from 1909 to 1915
- occurs in all forms of art
- against the past (arts and politics)
- Marietti (and followers) called themselves Futurists
- they admire speed, technology, youth, violence, human over nature
- emphasized dynamism, speed, energy, power of machine, vitality, change, restlessness of modern life
- dismiss old cult and imitation
- exhalt originality
- celebrating change
- inspire public anger & amazement

Futurism was also said to occur not only in Italy, but Russia, and in all forms of art. Futurism in painting has created a new term, Cubism which is defined by expressing dynamism and energy through paintings. Im not going to look into paintings that much though cos my focus here is poetry.

Futurism in Literature

- unexpected combinations of images \ hyper-conciseness
- free expressions

7 aspects to futurist literature, namely intuition, analogy, irony, abolition of syntax, metrical reform, onomatopoeia, and essential/synthetic lyricism.

1. Intuition whereby art is expressed (conceptually and execution wise), through spontaneity and intuition.

2. Analogy; to show how everything is interconnected by combining two non-related subjects and piecing it together, the more startling, the better.

3. Irony; "so old and forgotten that it looked almost new when the dust was brushed away from it. What was new and untried, at least more so than their principles and theories, were the futurists' stylistic devices"

4. Abolition of Syntax; dismisses the old way of arranging words in proper form, but not thoroughly.

5. Metrical reform; using words as a main uni instead of verse, to allow more expression and less of syntax, puntutaions

6. Onomatopoeia; 4 kinds of onomatopoeia; direct, indirect, integral and
abstract. Direct; uses of sound. Indirect; responses to external conditions.
Integral; using any collection of words to represent sound, and abstract; to
capture motion of the soul.

7. Essential \ synthetic lyricism; promote hyper conciseness, compressing down superfluos objects to to express a language unseen elsewhere. Also the reason why Futurists did not write any novels.

Execution; Collage

With all these discoveries, i was wondering if collage \ visual \ concrete poetry has lost its meaning, or does it contain any meaning in the first place for it was constructed through cutting and pasting from different sources.

What i wanted to achieve however, is a story, or any form of expression that has a meaning to it.

What is Collage, anyway?

Collage is the combination of pieces of diverse materials and media, such as newspaper, magazines, package labels, fabric, paint and photographs, into one composition. (smashingmagazine.com)

I was inspired by the collages below. It conveyed a simple message\ meaning\ story to it.

im hoping to be able to come out with my own poem and compose it together using cut ups\ collage as my medium.

Concrete poetry, Burroughs, Charles Henry Ford

Poetry is a literary art using language to convey a meaning or to evoke emotional or sensual responses. There are different types of poetry such as poetic drama, hymn, lyrics, prose poetry, digital poetry, etc.

I havent hear much about digital poetry therefore i decided to research more about digital poetry. Digital peotry is poem conveyed in different forms of media, eg. dvd, kinetic texts, the internet, blogs, experimental video poetry, etc.

Digital poetry includes visual poetry(sometimes referred as concrete poetry) which uses symobols, images and texts. However visual poetry havent got a concrete definition to it. Visual poetry has been around even before printing were made accesible. Visual poetry can also be achieved by the way a poet arranges his texts to evoke a certain meaning. Visual poetry (or concrete poetry) uses word placement, and visualization to depict the shape or central movement of the subject.

There are three types of concrete poetry; Visual, Phonetic and Kinetic. Theres also a new type of poetry which involves multimedia or interaction, but it was not elaborated. Infact, concrete poetry itself hasnt got a definite meaning, it was said to be more of a form of expression and communication and mostly depend on the artists themselves.

Here are some examples of the concrete poetry:

As i continue to search for more examples, i came across William S. Burroughs. He was said to a writer, poet, novelist and a painter. I am keen to know more about Burroughs and his works because i had intended to use collage\paper montage for my excution part because of my odd attraction towards papery stuffs. Therefore my research will divert to Burrough's works.

Burroughs have come up with different literacy styles.

1. Early work
2. Cut Up Period
3. Experiment & Subversion
4. The Red Night Trilogy

I am most attracted to Burrough's cut up technique. Burroughs literally cuts up passages of prose by himself and other writers and then pastes them back together at random.

Here are examples of Burrough's work:

I really like Burrough's method of cut up, because it is basically just cut up text arrangeed at random to create a new text. I couldnt find more on his cut up works because he applied this technique to film as well and he is more of a novelist than a poet.

I didnt get much on visual poetry through my research on Burroughs. Back to where I started, I wanted to use collage as a means of execution and this leads me to my next research on collage poetry.

Charles Henry Ford created poster poem that are basically words pieced together from magazine cut outs.

The Topic

I want to tell a story.

So, thats how i derived to poetry. I brainstormed a bit. Well, a lot. And decided that poetry is the best medium to portray a feeling.

Trough this topic, i will roughly research on

how poetry come about (just for my general knowledge),

the greatest poet around (or not) and

how one's life is reflected in the poet written by them.
